Helsinki Airport terminal in winter

From 1 October 2026, travelling from Dubai to Finland becomes much simpler. Emirates is launching a daily nonstop flight from Dubai to Helsinki, creating the only year-round direct air link between the UAE and Finland.

But if your real goal is snow, glass cabins, skiing or the Northern Lights, Helsinki is only the first step. Finnish Lapland is hundreds of kilometres farther north, and the best onward route depends on whether you choose Rovaniemi, Levi, Ylläs, Saariselkä or Inari.

This guide explains the journey the practical way: which airport to use, whether to stop in Helsinki, when to fly or take the night train, when a rental car helps, and where paying extra for a luxury experience genuinely makes a difference.

Does Emirates fly directly from Dubai to Finland?

Yes. From 1 October 2026, Emirates is scheduled to operate Dubai–Helsinki every day.

This matters because it removes the need for a European connection on the journey from the UAE to Finland. Emirates describes the new route as the only year-round direct air connection between Finland and the UAE.

The airline is using its A350 on the route. For most travellers, however, the important part is not the aircraft — it is what happens after you land.

If Helsinki is your destination, you are there. If you are heading to Lapland, you still need to travel north.

Does Emirates fly directly to Rovaniemi or Lapland?

Not on the new route announced for October 2026. Emirates flies to Helsinki, not directly to Rovaniemi.

Fortunately, getting from Helsinki to Lapland is straightforward once you choose the right gateway.

Do not start by asking, "How do I get to Lapland?" Start by choosing where in Lapland you actually want to stay. Rovaniemi, Levi, Ylläs and Saariselkä offer quite different trips.

The easiest routes from Dubai to Finnish Lapland

Dubai → Helsinki → Rovaniemi

Best for: first-time visitors, families, Santa Claus experiences, a large choice of activities and shorter Lapland trips.

Fly Emirates to Helsinki and continue to Rovaniemi Airport.

The other interesting option is the overnight train from Helsinki to Rovaniemi. You travel north while you sleep and arrive in Lapland the following morning.

Local reality: Rovaniemi is probably the easiest all-round Lapland destination to organise. If you stay reasonably centrally and book activities with transfers, you may not need a rental car at all.

Dubai → Helsinki → Kittilä → Levi

Best for: skiing, restaurants, premium accommodation and travellers who want a polished resort.

Fly from Helsinki to Kittilä Airport and continue to Levi.

Levi is compact enough that a car is not essential if you stay near the centre. A car becomes more useful if you choose a private villa away from the resort or want to explore independently.

Local reality: if you want an easy combination of skiing, restaurants, services and high-end accommodation, Levi is one of the simplest choices in Finnish Lapland.

Dubai → Helsinki → Kittilä → Ylläs

Best for: cabins, fells, cross-country skiing and a quieter nature-focused holiday.

Ylläs uses the same main airport gateway as Levi: Kittilä.

The destination is more spread out, particularly around Äkäslompolo and Ylläsjärvi, so your exact accommodation location matters more.

Local reality: Ylläs is a strong choice if the cabin, sauna and surrounding landscape matter more to you than having a large resort centre outside your door. A rental car or well-planned transfers can be valuable here.

Dubai → Helsinki → Ivalo → Saariselkä

Best for: Arctic landscapes, a compact northern resort, winter activities and premium wilderness accommodation.

Fly to Ivalo Airport and continue south to Saariselkä.

Saariselkä feels distinctly northern while still being relatively easy to organise.

Local reality: this is a very good middle ground for travellers who want wilderness without making the trip unnecessarily difficult.

Dubai → Helsinki → Ivalo → Inari

Best for: quieter wilderness, Sámi culture, Lake Inari and travellers who care more about the Arctic environment than resort life.

Ivalo is also the practical airport for Inari.

Inari is not simply another ski resort. It offers a different type of northern trip, with a stronger emphasis on nature, local culture and the vast landscapes of northern Lapland.

Local reality: choose Inari deliberately. If nightlife, a large ski resort or lots of restaurants are important, Levi may suit you better. If privacy and the feeling of being far north matter more, Inari becomes much more interesting.

Rovaniemi: the most straightforward first Lapland base for many visitors.

Should you stay in Helsinki before going to Lapland?

Often, yes — but not automatically.

If this is your first trip to Finland and you have a week or more, one or two nights in Helsinki can make the journey more interesting without consuming too much of your Lapland time.

You can recover from the flight, experience Finnish sauna culture, eat well and see a completely different side of Finland before travelling north.

Finnish sauna: Premium sauna does not have to mean a marble spa. For a first Finnish sauna, choose either an easy waterfront experience in Helsinki or, in Lapland, a private wood-heated sauna in a beautiful setting with a proper cooling area. See the Finnish sauna guide.

But if you only have four or five nights and snow is the main reason for the trip, adding a Helsinki city break can work against you. In that case, getting north efficiently and staying in one Lapland destination usually makes more sense.

Local verdict: With around a week in Finland, Helsinki plus one Lapland base is a clean, easy itinerary. Do not turn a short Arctic holiday into a race between three Lapland resorts.

Flight, night train or rental car from Helsinki?

Fly

Flying is usually the simplest option when you already know where you are staying.

Helsinki has domestic connections to the main Lapland gateways, and the flight north is short compared with the distance by road.

If you have not yet booked your flights to Finland, it is worth comparing options before committing to a route.

Take the night train

The overnight train is particularly useful for Rovaniemi.

It is slower than flying, but that misses the point. A sleeper cabin turns the journey itself into part of the holiday and can replace a hotel night.

For Levi, Ylläs, Saariselkä and Inari, flying to the appropriate northern airport is usually more straightforward.

Rent a car

A rental car makes sense when the car solves a real problem: a remote cabin, several destinations, independent day trips or a proper Finland road trip.

Do not rent one simply because you assume Lapland requires a car.

And after a long flight from Dubai, we would not choose a Helsinki-to-Lapland winter drive as the first thing to do. The distance is long and winter driving adds another layer of concentration.

A practical 7-night Dubai to Finland itinerary

For a first trip, keep it simple.

Days 1–2: Helsinki

Arrive from Dubai, recover, explore Helsinki and experience a Finnish sauna.

Day 3: Travel north

Fly or take the night train to your chosen Lapland base.

Days 3–7: Stay in one Lapland destination

Build your activities around one base rather than changing hotels constantly. Northern Lights tours, skiing, huskies, reindeer experiences, sauna and simply having time outdoors are easier to enjoy when every day is not a transfer day.

Day 8: Begin the journey home

Return south according to your flight itinerary.

If you have more time, then adding a second Lapland destination can make sense. With only a week, one good base is usually enough.

Planning a luxury Lapland trip from Dubai?

This is where Finland gets interesting at the high end.

Luxury in Lapland should not mean paying a huge amount for an ordinary hotel room with a fur blanket on the bed. The best expensive trips use money to remove friction and create privacy.

Think exceptional private accommodation, seamless airport transfers, a genuinely good private guide, sauna and wellness, excellent food and enough unscheduled time to enjoy where you are.

Rovaniemi has some of Finland's most exclusive private wilderness accommodation. Visit Finland currently lists Octola Private Wilderness, around 20 minutes from Rovaniemi Airport, from €12,000.

Levi combines luxury villas with the services of a major ski resort.

Farther north, Saariselkä and Inari become interesting for travellers who value privacy, wilderness and the Arctic setting itself.

New high-end Lapland accommodation is also continuing to open. Visit Finland has highlighted projects including Octola II, Arcora Boutique Hotel & Villas, Gáldu Hotel & Spa and Skýra Retreat among Finland's 2026 Arctic luxury developments.

The important point is not to buy the most expensive room. Decide what you are paying to improve: privacy, location, service, food, transfers or access to experiences.

Why the new Emirates route matters

The Dubai–Helsinki service is more than a convenient flight for people living in Dubai.

Dubai is a major connecting hub. Emirates says the Helsinki timetable has been designed to provide onward connections across its network, including Riyadh, Dammam, Muscat and Kuwait City as well as destinations across Asia, Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

Emirates and Visit Finland have also announced a tourism partnership aimed at increasing travel to Finland through the airline's international network.

That makes Helsinki a new gateway to Finland not only for the UAE, but potentially for a much wider group of travellers connecting through Dubai.

What UAE and Gulf travellers should know about Finnish winter

The cold is manageable. The bigger surprise for many first-time visitors is how different everyday life becomes this far north.

Daylight changes dramatically

December in Lapland can be very dark. By March, there is far more daylight.

That difference changes the entire feel of a trip, so do not choose your month based only on temperature.

Proper winter clothing matters

You do not need to suffer to experience Lapland.

Use layers, proper winter boots, gloves and head protection. For many travellers, renting specialist winter clothing in Lapland is easier than buying equipment that may rarely be used at home.

Northern Lights are never guaranteed

Lapland gives you good conditions for seeing the aurora, but nobody can guarantee that the sky will perform on a particular night.

A longer stay improves your opportunities simply because you have more nights available.

Do not schedule every hour

A husky safari, skiing, a private dinner, a Northern Lights tour and a snowmobile excursion may all sound excellent when booking from home.

Putting all of them into the same day is not excellent.

Leave space for weather, rest, sauna and simply being in Lapland.

Check practical requirements directly

If you have particular dietary, privacy or service requirements, ask the hotel or activity provider before booking rather than assuming what will be available.

At the luxury end, this is also where paying for a good property or private service can make a meaningful difference.

When is the best time to travel from Dubai to Lapland?

There is no single best month.

December to early January: maximum Christmas atmosphere and very high demand, but also the shortest daylight.

January: deep winter and usually a calmer atmosphere after the holiday peak. It can be seriously cold.

February and March: still proper winter in Lapland, but with much more daylight. For many first-time visitors, this is an excellent balance.

Autumn: Northern Lights season can already be underway, but do not book an autumn trip expecting guaranteed snow.

Summer: a completely different Finland. Long days, green forests, lakes and Helsinki replace the classic snow-holiday experience.

If snow is essential to your trip, always check the conditions relevant to your dates rather than relying on an old photograph or a generic "winter in Finland" promise.

Before you book

  1. Choose your Lapland destination first.
  2. Choose the correct northern airport: Rovaniemi, Kittilä or Ivalo.
  3. Decide whether Helsinki is part of the holiday or simply your connection.
  4. Book exceptional or high-demand accommodation early.
  5. Check the final journey from the airport to your accommodation.
  6. Rent a car only if it improves your particular itinerary.
  7. Prepare proper winter clothing.
  8. Leave some flexibility for Arctic weather.

If you are still choosing between destinations, start with the comparison of Rovaniemi, Levi, Ylläs and Saariselkä rather than booking the first glass igloo you see.

Frequently asked questions

Does Emirates fly to Finland?

Yes. Emirates is scheduled to begin daily nonstop flights between Dubai and Helsinki on 1 October 2026.

Does Emirates fly to Rovaniemi?

The new Emirates Finland service announced for October 2026 flies to Helsinki, not Rovaniemi. Continue from Helsinki to Rovaniemi by domestic flight or train.

How do I get from Dubai to Lapland?

Fly Dubai to Helsinki, then continue to the airport that serves your chosen Lapland destination. Use Rovaniemi for Rovaniemi, Kittilä for Levi and Ylläs, and Ivalo for Saariselkä and Inari.

Which airport should I use for Levi?

Kittilä Airport is the main gateway for Levi.

Which airport should I use for Saariselkä and Inari?

Ivalo Airport is the practical gateway for both.

Should I stay in Helsinki before Lapland?

If you have roughly a week or more and this is your first Finland trip, one or two nights can work well. For a short trip focused entirely on snow and Arctic experiences, continuing north sooner is usually more efficient.

Do I need a car in Lapland?

Not necessarily. A central resort stay can work very well without one. A car becomes more useful for remote accommodation, independent exploring or multi-stop itineraries.

How many days do I need for Helsinki and Lapland?

Around a week is enough for a simple Helsinki plus one-Lapland-base itinerary. More time gives you room to slow down or add another destination.

Is Finnish Lapland suitable for a luxury holiday?

Yes. Finnish Lapland has everything from premium resort hotels and glass accommodation to private wilderness lodges, villas, private transfers, chefs and tailored experiences. At the very high end, the best reason to spend more is privacy and seamless service rather than simply a more expensive room.
